The indie-pop quartet from Versailles, France is coming to Manila for the first time to perform hits from their earlier albums as well as from their 2009 Grammy Award winning album ‘Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix’ such as ‘Lasso’, ‘Lisztomania’ and ‘1901’. The band will also be playing tracks from their recently released album ‘Bankrupt!’.
From its inception in 1999 to playing before crowds at sold-out shows all over the world, Phoenix’s international success is undeniable. Their accomplishment as artists is only reaffirmed by their fifth studio album, Bankrupt!, which was described by The Guardian as “a classy, occasionally experimental set informed by breezy 80s sounds and vintage synths.” The 10-track follow up to ‘Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix’ is considered by many as a self-reflective commentary of the band’s experience post-success with songs like ‘SOS in Bel Air’ and ‘Oblique City’ describing the pros and cons of their life on the road.
With five albums under its belt, Phoenix’s roster of songs will definitely get the crowd at the World Trade Center pumped up with their adrenaline-inducing riffs and catchy wordplay. With a headliner like Phoenix, concert-goers will surely appreciate the intimate feel of the World Trade Center as this will allow the band to fully interact and feed off of the energy of an enthusiastic and passionate crowd.
There are many things to look forward to in 2014 and watching Thomas Mars, Deck D’Arcy, Christian Mazzalai, and Laurent Brancowitz play our favorite Phoenix songs for the first time in Manila is unquestionably one of them. The lisztomania surrounding this international headliner is contagious and Phoenix fans will surely have their earful of the French foursome’s signature quirky tunes on January 21.
Tickets will be available at all SM Ticket outlets nationwide starting on October 16, 2013. This event is made possible by: Karpos Multimedia
Wanderband sets the stage for aspiring amateur indie bands, as a ‘battle of the bands’ competition that aims to usher in a new breed of Filipino bands. A multitude of hopefuls sent their entries in, showcasing diverse style, and most importantly, talent. After a tedious deliberation using an organized criteria system, fifteen bands made it through the semi-finals.
The fifteen bands had to go through another elimination round, which required their supporters’ participation. It was an online contest that gauged the band’s online appeal to music lovers. The fans were requested to share their favored band’s video on Facebook that, in a way, also promotes the musicians’ talents, and the event to other Facebook users.
The race began last October 7 and ended at exactly 11:59pm on October 20, 2013. 50% of the bands’ final score came from the online votes, while the other 50% was from the judges’ votes. The top 8 bands that garnered the highest combined scores, announced last October 21, 2013 are as follows:
1. NAOMI AOKI
3. KIAN RANSOM
5. OURSELVES THE ELVES
6. IDIOMS AND DISPOSITIONS
7. RAMBUNCTIOUS X
8. CHOCOLATE GRASS
Every band member emerges from different walks of life, but they have one thing in common- their love for music. Each band boasts of an appeal and identity that represents both their musical influences and where they want to be as artists. The styles range from pop to reggae, synth to acoustic, party to mellow and an overlap of one or the other.
These hopefuls will contend in the Wanderband Final Battle, with a live performance of one cover song and one original, in order to impress the judges and win the heart of the crowd. The emerging winner will claim the title “the Wanderband”, take home Php 50, 000 cash prize and perform live on the Wanderland 2014 stage. The 2nd place winner will get to perform in Wanderland 2014 as well. With so much at stake, the Wanderband Final Battle is sure to be a display of raw talent and a showcase of undeniable musicality.
On May 18, 2013, hipsters/indie music lovers all over the Philippines flocked the Circuit Events Ground in Makati to witness the very first Wanderland Music and Arts Festival. From inflatable slides to live art, concert-goers definitely had their fill of fun and exciting activities that kept them occupied in-between bands. Revelers also dressed the part as the girls donned flower crowns and cropped tops and the guys pulled off printed polos and colorful tank tops. Dozens of colorful mats were on full display during the event as people basked in the summer sun and embraced the warmth while waiting for their favorite acts to play.
Sarah Marco and the rest of Taken By Cars kicked off the concert proper as her soothing voice got the crowd excited. Their performance was succeeded by the promising roster of up-and-coming Filipino bands which started with the three man post-rock band Pulso. Their set was followed by the indie band She’s Only Sixteen, with frontman Roberto Seña crooning the girls in the audience as they performed their original compositions. Yolanda Moon – another crowd favorite – graced the stage afterwards, entertaining the crowd with their soulful melodies and chill sounds.
The afternoon was then welcomed by the indie pop duo from Australia, Colour Coding. Cousins Chris Holland and Tim Commandeur charmed the pants off of the female revelers in the crowd as they performed their signature catchy tunes to their Filipino fans. They were also cool enough to meet and take photos with their fans as they roamed around the Circuit Events Ground after their set was over.
As the beautiful onset of the setting sun came to view, the feel good music of Avalanche City filled the tropical summer air. The blues, purples, and oranges of the sky was the perfect backdrop to their songs like Sunset and You and I. Tully on Tully graced the stage afterwards as female vocalist Natalie Foster kept the crowd’s energy up for the next artist – local headliner – Up Dharma Down. The indie quartet performed songs from their earlier albums as well as from their latest released record, Capacities. Diehard UDD fans had their fill of their favorite tracks and had a blast singing along to every one of them.
The roster of foreign headliners came next. The show was opened by American alternative rock band, Nada Surf. 90s kids were definitely transported to their childhood as the band performed songs that were reminiscent of their favorite The O.C. and One Tree Hill episodes. Their nostalgic set was succeeded by Neon Trees’ highly energetic songs that got the crowd’s adrenaline pumping. With Tyler Glenn’s on-stage antics and his knack for crowd surfing, revelers were surely treated to an unforgettable performance.
The final act to grace the Wanderland stage was Australian band, Temper Trap. The band played started their set with the song Love Lost. The instant the intro was played, the crowd at the Circuit Events Ground went wild. Everyone felt invincible as they belted out the heartfelt lyrics to the song. The band also performed their other hits like Fader and Drum Song and a few new ones from their latest self-titled album, “The Temper Trap.” But it was when they performed their final song that everyone in the crowd got goosebumps. The moment the lights died down and the distinct guitar riff of Temper Trap’s Sweet Disposition filled the air, everyone felt infinite. That song perfectly encapsulated the entire Wanderland experience and it definitely left the audiences in high spirits.
Step into Wanderland:
The ultimate sonic playground for the summer 6/9
Get ready for one surreal summer experience as Karpos Multimedia Inc. proudly presents Wanderland, an annual outdoor music and arts festival with sights, sounds and a little something extra. Slated to rock music-loving Manila on May 18, 2013, this whole-day event is the first of its kind in the Philippines and will be the first major concert at the new Globe Circuit Events Ground in Makati.
Wanderland makes its scorching debut this summer by bringing together the hottest indie pop and indie rock bands and up-and-comers, both foreign and local, all on one stage. All the rage activities also await revelers, such as performances by live art artists Anjo Bolarda x Martojaks, and Thursday Room, inflatable slides, jousts and a Velcro wall.
Headlining the music festival is Australian five-piece outfit The Temper Trap, best known for upbeat joyride tracks “Sweet Disposition,” “Fader” and “Need Your Love.” Composed of Dougy Mandagi (vocals), Jonathon Aherne (bass guitar), Toby Dundas (drums), Lorenzo Sillitto (lead guitar), and Joseph Greer (keyboards, guitar), The Temper Trap formed in 2005 and steadily built a solid fanbase while playing at numerous music festivals in Australia, the UK and beyond. In 2009, the band took the mainstream music scene by storm with its critically acclaimed debut album Conditions, whose ethereal carrier single “Sweet Disposition” shot up the European music charts and spawned several remixes, including the popular house version by Axwell & Dirty South. The Temper Trap went on to land two distinctions --- “Best Group” for Conditions and “Most Popular Australian Single” for "Sweet Disposition” --- at the 2010 ARIA Music Awards. That same year, the band broke into the US market, with “Sweet Disposition” gaining heavy radio airplay and figuring prominently in various TV shows (“Skins,” “Greek,” “One Tree Hill”), commercials and films (“500 Days of Summer,” “Eat, Pray, Love”). Conditions also spawned two more soundtrack staples: the infectious ditty “Fader” (“The Vampire Diaries”) and the easy, breezy “Love Lost” (“Pretty Little Liars”). After an extensive touring circuit, the quintet released their eponymous second album in May of 2012 by Infectious Music, which includes the lead track, “Need Your Love,” and the most recent single, “Trembling Hands.” The band enjoyed a stellar 2012, debuting the record across sell-out tours of the US, UK and Australia in March, April and May, including two sold out shows at London’s Koko. They completed a sell out US tour ahead of a run of summer festivals, including appearances at T in the Park, Wilderness and Truck Festival, and a show at Somerset House that sold out in less than 48 hours. They closed the year supporting Coldplay on their autumn stadium tour of Australia, before heading back to the UK to play Xfm’s Winter Wonderland.
Joining The Temper Trap are two American alt-rock bands: Neon Trees, who rose to popularity with certified charttoppers “Animal,” “Everybody Talks” and “1983”; and Nada Surf, who’s responsible for the ‘90s coming-of- age track “Popular,” the melancholy “Inside of Love” and its unforgettable rendition of the new wave anthem “If You Leave” from the seminal soundtrack of “The O.C.” The lineup offers more indie-pop goodness in the form of New Zealand-based folk group Avalanche City, Australian pop duo Colour Coding, and the female-fronted indie quintet from Melbourne, Tully on Tully. Homegrown talents Up Dharma Down, Taken By Cars, Pulso, Yolanda Moon, and She’s Only Sixteen round up the cast.
Tickets are priced at PhP 4,800 (exclusive of ticket service charge), available at all TicketNet, TicketWorld and SM Tickets outlets. Gates open at 11AM.

Wanderland 2013 is presented by Karpos Multimedia Inc., the group behind The Cranberries Live in Manila, We Are The In Crowd, This Century and Set Your Goals, The Maine Live in Manila among others.
WATIC, TC & SYG Rocked the Big Dome!
The 2nd of June was a great day for the fans of Set Your Goals, This Century and We Are The In Crowd. As presented by Pulp Live World and Karpos Multimedia, the three bands rocked the Smart Araneta Coliseum. And even before any of the bands came out, screams of excitement from fans could be heard all over the Big Dome.
Set Your Goals got the ball rolling with some hardcore and punk rock music. The band framed their performance with some clips from the film Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back playing in the background. The crowd started going wild, as they got carried away with heavy guitar riffs and piercing beats of Set Your Goal’s hits.
Next on stage was This Century. As soon as the band stepped out of the shadows, deafening screams filled the whole stadium. Vocalist Joel Kanitz wore a sleeveless shirt with the red, blue and the three stars of the Philippine flag. Fans were singing and dancing along to hits like “Hopeful Romantic”, “Bleach Blonde”, “Everywhere Everything”, and “Sound of Fire”, wherein the band took in a member of the audience to sing along with them on stage.
Last but not the least was We Are The In Crowd. It was already the third band for the night and yet the energy was still high as fans cheered tirelessly. Taylor, Jordan, Cameron, Mike and Rob gladly gave the audience their signature performance, belting out their hits “Rumour Mill”, “Kiss Me Again” and “For The Win”.
Even after being exhausted from screaming, jumping and singing, the fans still took home one great concert experience to remember.
Cranberries relived their greatest hits in Manila
An estimated crowd of ten thousand people flocked the Big Dome last April 10 to relive the classic rock music of one of the grunge era’s most beloved band – the Cranberries.
Loud cheering from the fans was heard as the band came out. Despite having no front act, The Cranberries did not disappoint in bringing out the crowd’s energy with a great set list that summarized all the albums, years and memories they all have shared with their fans. They kicked it off with the 1992 hit, “Dreams”, a perfect way to open up the show with that song being the very first single released by the Cranberries. Then it was followed by Billboard chart topper, “Linger”. They also performed other hit songs like “Animal Instinct”, “Ode To My Family”, “Just My Imagination” and “Zombie” which were undeniably the crowd’s favorite. Also, they included some new tracks from their new album Roses like “Schizophrenic Playboy”, “Raining In My Heart” and “Tomorrow”.
The group gave it their all with every song performed. Youthful as ever, Dolores O’Riordan was tireless and just kept her energy high from beginning to end. And after all these years, her voice is still very powerful, haunting and beautiful. The two brothers, Mike and Noel Hogan, and drummer Fergal Lawler were also in high spirits and just rocked out through the night.
A show dedicated to all the 90’s rock kids, The Cranberries Live in Manila is truly a concert that Philippine music fans won’t soon forget.
The Maine shakes the Sky dome.
“Yeah, you were dancing to your favorite song. And all my friends they were singing along.” Perhaps this line from the song Like We Did probably best describes the concert of the Arizona based band, The Maine, last March 31 at the SM North EDSA Skydome.
The excitement started ahead as earlier that day, a press conference was held, followed by a sound check party, which fans eagerly lined up for. By 5pm, everyone was good and ready for the show. Front act Itchyworms performed a good number of songs just enough to warm up the crowd.
Soon enough, the loud chanting of “We like to party! We like, we like to party!” was heard, a distinct feature in concerts of The Maine which signals that the show is about to start. As soon as Kennedy Brock, Jared Monaco, Pat Kirch, Garrett Nickelsen and John O’ Callaghan hit the stage, loud roar echoed in the Skydome. The 19 song set began with “Identify” from their new album Pioneer, and wrapped up with the hit “Don’t Give Up On Us.”
The crowd energy was incredible, as the band put so much into every song, making sure that everyone in the audience felt included. Everyone was jumping up and down so hard, it’s as if one could feel the floor shake. The show was a success, and a bigger Philippine fan base for The Maine could definitely be expected
